WIDE BAY WELCOMES NEW WORK FOR THE DOLE ACTIVITIES
2nd October, 2007
Federal Member for Wide Bay Warren Truss today announced seven new Work for the Dole activities in the electorate of Wide Bay.Mr Truss said the new Work for the Dole activities will provide opportunities for 132 job seekers to gain valuable work experience. The projects are located at Gympie, Tin Can Bay, Noosaville, Pomona, Maryborough, Mungar, Kilkivan and several other centres.
“Participants in Work for the Dole activities are improving their prospects of finding a job and they are re-building their self esteem and work skills,” Mr Truss said.
“It’s a Mutual Obligation initiative which gives job seekers what they need–active participation and continuing contact with the world of work.”
Mr Truss said the activities being sponsored by Work for the Dole projects in Wide Bay were typically diverse, and ranged from retail training, grounds maintenance, nursery work and administration skills training right through to computer training and radio announcing.
“Work for the Dole is a unique programme which has greatly assisted over half a million unemployed people across the country,” Mr Truss said.
By undertaking a Work for the Dole placement job seekers are able to qualify for training credits of up to $800, which they can use to build and extend the valuable work skills they gain through Work for the Dole.
Since Work for the Dole was introduced in 1997, almost 600,000 unemployed Australians have taken part in almost 35,000 activities nationally.
“There is no doubt that Work for the Dole is working. It is part of the Australian Government’s integrated approach to tackling long-term unemployment and its success is reflected in the record low levels of unemployment and the significant falls in long term unemployment,” Mr Truss said.
“I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate the local Community Work Coordinators and project sponsors who have successfully proposed these very worthwhile activities. Their expertise will provide an opportunity for many unemployed people in our region to build their skills base, gain valuable self confidence in their employability and begin to stitch together contacts who will help them land more permanent work in the future,” Mr Truss said.
