Peregian Beach Volunteers doing their bit for the Environment
4th October, 2007
Federal Member for Wide Bay Warren Truss today announced that the South Peregian Beach Community Association Inc. will receive funding for the Victory Park Dune Revegetation Project Stage Nine .Mr Truss said $19,477.50 would be made available to the Community Association under Round 9 of the Australian Government’s highly popular Envirofund programme.
“This project will continue the regeneration of the Peregian Dunes to Stage 9, and will remove the herbaceous and small woody weeds from the beach access to the rise just north of Piper Street,” Mr Truss said.
“A contractor will be engaged to undertake the weed removal using the Bradley Best Practice Bush Regeneration method. Peregian Beach Community Association volunteers will spread mulch and replant the area with endemic species. Outcomes will be measured by monitoring the replanting with before and after photos.”
Mr Truss said the funding was part of $305,217.75 being made available for 18 projects across Wide Bay electorate.
“Envirofund demonstrates the Australian Government’s commitment to supporting local communities in their work to improve our environment, Mr Truss said.
“Local people are working hard, giving their own time and resources in many cases, to rehabilitate the fauna and flora in our local habitats. Envirofund is one way the Australian Government has of assisting these people in the valuable work that they do.”
“Since its inception in 2002, the Australian Government has now provided Australian communities with more than $130 million to undertake almost 8,000 Envirofund projects,” Mr Truss said.
Envirofund is the local component of the Australian Government’s $5.1 billion Natural Heritage Trust. Individuals and groups can apply for grants of up to $50,000 for local projects such as planting native plants, fencing to protect native bushland, skill and knowledge building activities, and trials of new techniques for sustainable farming, forestry or fishing.
Applicants are required to make a contribution to the project in the form of cash or in-kind services such as labour. Applications for funding of local environment projects through the next round of the Australian Government Envirofund will open in early 2008. Exact dates and details will be advertised on the Envirofund website: www.nht.gov.au/envirofund
