COOROY TOURISM BOOSTED WITH AUSTRALIAN GOVERNMENT FUNDING

11th October, 2007
Federal Member for Wide Bay Warren Truss today announced Australian Government funding of $100,000 for a tourism project at Cooroy.

Mr Truss said the Noosa Shire Council will receive funding for the Cooroy Lower Mill Site - Interpretive Centre, Heritage Plantings and Signage project from the Government's Australian Tourism Development (ATDP) Program.

“This project will develop the Cooroy Lower Mill Site as a tourism destination highlighting the heritage aspects of Cooroy, including the local indigenous people and the timber and dairy industries,” Mr Truss said.

“As the first stop on the Cooroy Heritage Walk this tourism experience will engage visitors in the history and flora of Cooroy. ATDP and partnership funds will be used for the refurbishment of the sawmill boiler as an interpretive centre, the planting of tree species which were significant to the indigenous people and the timber industry, and also signage associated with promoting the centre.”

Mr Truss said round 5 of the Australian Tourism Development Program was a special round open only to applicants from drought exceptional circumstances declared areas.

“I congratulate Noosa Shire Council for securing this funding. It is a great project and will help bring more tourists to our region," Mr Truss said.

"The drought has caused hardship throughout Australia. Through initiatives such as this, the Australian Government is providing practical on the ground support to boost incomes depressed by drought.

“This funding is part of the Australian Government's commitment to keeping our economy strong. By attracting more tourists to our local area, we can help boost the local economy by creating extra jobs and providing more opportunities for small business.”
