127 million litres of water saved each year
30th October, 2007
Federal Member for Wide Bay Warren Truss today congratulated all 27 local groups which will receive funding to help save and protect our nation’s water supply under the Coalition Government’s $400 million Community Water Grants programme.Mr Truss welcomed the announcement of successful water saving projects in Wide Bay under Round 3 of the programme.
“These 27 projects will receive a combined total of over $1 million, but the really good news is that they will save a total of 127 million litres of water each year. That is an amazing result,” Mr Truss said.
The original $200 million Community Water Grants programme was part of the $2 billion Australian Government Water Fund — established by the Coalition in 2004. In the last budget the Coalition Government committed an additional $200 million to the Community Water Grants programme.
“Community Water Grants projects promote wise water use and community engagement, as well as awareness about water efficiency and conservation, water recycling and improving water quality. The Coalition Government understands the vital role the community plays in managing our water resources,” Mr Truss said.
In previous funding rounds, Community Water Grants has provided $130 million to help communities around Australia undertake over 3200 community water savings projects.
“The Coalition’s Community Water Grants programme has assisted thousands of local groups to save water through projects that have been driven by the community, for the community,” Mr Truss said.
“I look forward to visiting these successful local projects to see firsthand our local community’s commitment to saving water.”
This programme is complimented by the Coalition’s $17.7 million Centenary of Scouts Programme, to assist install water tanks in every Australian Scout hall and the $336 million Green Vouchers for Schools programme.
