Pay phone for Tinnanbar

30th October, 2007
The Federal Member for Wide Bay, Mr Warren Truss, has welcomed advice from Telstra that a Pay Phone is to be installed at Tinnanbar.

Mr Truss said he had been approached by the Tinnanbar Ratepayers Association to have a Pay Phone installed in the community and he was pleased that Telstra had responded positively.

Mr Truss said the nearest Pay Phone to Tinnanbar is at Poona, 26 kilometres away.

While the telephone is not likely to ever cover its costs, it is important to have Pay Phones available at reasonably regular intervals, especially in areas frequented by tourists and the fishing community.

The installation costs and yearly running expenses will be shared by all telecommunications providers in Australia as a part of the Universal Service Obligation.

Mr Truss said he had been informed that Telstra is currently discussing the proposed site for the Pay Phone with the Tiaro Shire Council with the view to installing the Pay Phone early next year.
