Truss declared winner in Wide Bay poll
14th December, 2007
Warren Truss will again represent the people of Wide Bay after the Australian Electoral Commission officially declared the federal election results for the seat today.Mr Truss received 58.5% of the vote on a two party preferred basis.
He today thanked Wide Bay residents for their support during the election campaign and for trusting him with another opportunity to work for them in Federal Parliament.
“The federal election was a tough race but in the end the people of Australia chose to give the Labor Party a turn in government. I will be working very hard, both as the Federal Member for Wide Bay and also as the leader of The Nationals, to keep the Government of Kevin Rudd accountable for their decisions,” Mr Truss said.
“Australia is very much a stronger, more prosperous and secure nation as a result of the 11 years of Coalition Government. In Wide Bay, unemployment has dropped to 30 year lows, incomes have grown and Australian Government services are very much better than those we inherited in 1996. My job is to try to ensure the Rudd Government does not upset the momentum of sustainable growth built by the Coalition Government in those years.”
“There is more work to be done to enable the region to achieve its potential and I will continue to make sure that issues affecting the region are dealt with effectively in my role as the Federal Member for Wide Bay. I am determined that we will continue to have a strong voice in Canberra.”
“My immediate priorities are to maintain the pressure to stop the Traveston Crossing Dam, persuade the State Government to reconsider its ill conceived Local Government mergers and to restore the $500 million of funding Labor intends to take off the Bruce Highway through Wide Bay,” Mr Truss said.
“Lyn and I pledge ourselves to continue to work hard for the electorate of Wide Bay,” Mr Truss said.
“I would like to thank my many campaign workers and helpers for their election time support and the voters of Wide Bay for their confidence.”
“I would encourage any person with concerns relating to Australian Government business to contact my office either by telephone, email or in person,” Mr Truss said.
