Saluting Their Service Promise for Gympie

4th January, 2008

Gympie’s Memorial Lane Murals Project will be granted a further $4,000 in the event of the re-election of a Coalition Government Federal Member for Wide Bay Warren Truss announced today.

Mr Truss said the funds will be provided through the Australian Government’s commemorations program, Saluting Their Service.

“Saluting Their Service encourages community participation in commemorative activities honouring the service and sacrifice of those who have served Australia in wars, conflicts and peace operations.”

Mr Truss said the funding would allow further development of Gympie’s Memorial Lane Murals project and follow two earlier grants for the project from the Federal Government.

“This lane, which connects Mary Street, Gympie’s main thoroughfare, with the city war memorial, is a worthy tribute to all those who have served Australia in military conflict,” Mr Truss said.

“Eventually, there will be eight panels in Memorial Lane, covering Australian Military involvement in all wars and conflicts from the Maori War of 1860 up to the present time,” he said.

Mr Truss said the eight panels will honour all Australian servicemen and women, past and present.

“I would like to congratulate the Gympie RSL Sub-branch and the entire community for the development of this tribute to our servicemen and women.”
