$200,000 for Sunshine Beach Black Spot intersection
26th August, 2008
Federal Member for Wide Bay, Warren Truss has welcomed Australian Government funding for a new roundabout that is to be installed at the intersection of Edwards Street and Pacific Avenue, Sunshine Beach.Mr Truss said that the single lane roundabout will increase safety and improve traffic flow for local residents and visitors to the area.
“The Government has responded to community calls to improve safety at this particular intersection. However, the Government should now also provide funding for the many other dangerous sections of roads in local communities.”
Mr Truss said that Federal Labor had dithered on the importance of maintaining the Black Spots funding program for many years.
“A previous Labor Government invented the Black Spot road funding program, but despite clear evidence of the lives saved and crashes the program helped to avoid, Labor subsequently abolished the program in the early 1990s.
“It took the Coalition’s return to Government in 1996 to reinstate this life saving program and fund it at an appropriate level,” Mr Truss said.
“This successful scheme has now fixed a large number of black spots in Wide Bay over the past 12 years and I am pleased that the new Government has agreed to continue the program.”
