World Teachers’ Day

30th October, 2008
World Teachers’ Day being celebrated tomorrow (31-10-08), is a chance to recognise the excellent contribution teachers make in building our communities, Federal Member for Wide Bay, Warren Truss said.

“Teachers perform an important job in educating and guiding young people to help them reach their potential and they do this well, even under some difficult and trying circumstances.

“Unfortunately teachers do not always get the support they need from state and federal governments. Teacher dissatisfaction is evident in the number of recent strikes that have occurred in almost every state.

“The Rudd Government promised an education revolution. The education reality is that Labor has taken away important school development programs including the billion dollar Investing in Our Schools Program, Community Water Grants and scaled back the value of Green Vouchers for schools.

“The Computers in Schools election promise has become a farce. Out of 116,000 computers that were supposed to have been delivered nationally in the first round, only 10,000 have landed on desks — none to state schools in this area.

“Australian children need the highest quality education. That’s why the Coalition plan for education at the next election will include policies that ensure teachers are properly resourced, properly supported and properly rewarded.

“World Teachers’ Day is an opportunity to congratulate outstanding teachers in our local schools.

“I’d like to acknowledge the outstanding contribution of teachers throughout Wide Bay and encourage parents and students to tell their teachers how much they appreciate the important role they serve in promoting the value of learning,” Mr Truss said.
