Rainbow Shores Stage Two rejection a precedent for Traveston Crossing dam

17th August, 2009
The Bligh Government’s decision to block Stage Two of the Rainbow Shores development at Inskip Point on environmental grounds establishes an irresistible precedent for the rejection of the proposed Traveston Crossing dam, Federal Member for Wide Bay Warren Truss said today.

“Anna Bligh’s newly found environmental enthusiasm must cause her to shred her plans for the Traveston Crossing dam,” Mr Truss said.

The State Government cited the need to protect the habitats of vulnerable native species including the black breasted button quail, the wallum froglet, the beach stone curlew, and red goshawk bird as the reason for blocking Stage Two of the Rainbow Shores project.

“The environmental grounds for rejecting the proposed Traveston Crossing dam are much more compelling,” Mr Truss said.

“The irreversible environmental destruction that the dam would cause is well documented. There are no strategies that can prevent the devastation that would be wreaked upon the endangered Mary River Cod, Mary River Turtle, Giant Barred Frog and the vulnerable Queensland Lungfish should the dam proceed.

“If Anna Bligh is to be consistent in her decision making she must immediately reject the Traveston Crossing dam.

“If she fails to do this, she will be exposed as only having blocked the Inskip Point development in a cynical backflip to avoid further scrutiny of her Government’s relationship with Labor Party connected lobbyists who have profited handsomely from her Government’s two faced dealing on Rainbow Shores.”
