$50,000 grant for Cherbourg State School inspires pride

14th October, 2009
Federal Member for Wide Bay, Warren Truss today welcomed a $50,000 grant from the National Australia Bank’s First Impact Award program made to Cherbourg State School.

“The First Impact Award recognises Cherbourg State School’s record of achievement by working with the community through a project that has improved skills and opportunities for young people,” Mr Truss said.

“The project encouraged students’ learning through the production of a series of books which tell stories about the culture and history of the area.

“Everyone involved in the project can be pleased with their work which has inspired pride in the community.

“I congratulate the School on the success of their application and I commend the School’s project partners, the Smith Family, the Gundoo Daycare Centre, the Cultural Precinct group and Ratartat artists for their contributions to strengthening the Cherbourg community.

“I wish the School well at the State Finals to be held later this month.”

Background

Cherbourg State School has been working with the Smith Family, the Gundoo Daycare Centre, the Cultural Precinct group and Ratartat artists to build Indigenous content and perspectives into the School’s curriculum.

The partnership with the Smith Family focused on an early years literacy project which involved writing, designing and illustrating books and integrating these into the School’s curriculum.

The Ratartat artists assisted the students with the artwork and layout of the published books and the Cultural Precinct group provided historical information.

Eight books have been published and the stories contained in them reflect the culture and history of the community.
