Colton coal mine proposal

9th July, 2010
The residents of Aldershot have very genuine concerns about a proposal to build an open-cut coal mine in their area, Federal Member for Wide Bay, Warren Truss said today.

“I have had several meetings with Aldershot residents, including one with a large group of people on Tuesday this week. They made their case very strongly and outlined their concerns very clearly,” Mr Truss said.

“I share the local residents’ anxiety about the close proximity of the proposed mine to their homes and waterways. They are worried about the noise and dust pollution from the mine, which could be as close as 2.15 kilometres from their homes. The health of residents and the environment, and the protection of property, are of paramount importance and must be thoroughly resolved as part of the assessment process.”

The mining company has not yet completed its environmental management plan but that document must address these issues and take heed of the community’s concerns.

The Queensland State Government also needs to act urgently and rigorously to end the uncertainty and anxiety felt by local Aldershot residents.

“While this issue is primarily one to be decided by the State Government, I have encouraged the residents to continue to keep me informed of their concerns, including whether there are any elements of the proposal that may trigger an assessment under the Federal Environmental Protection Biodiversity Conservation Act,” Mr Truss said.

“I have already written to the State Minister for Natural Resources, Mines and Energy, Mr Stephen Robertson, to highlight local residents’ concerns. At the request of Aldershot residents, I have asked Mr Robertson to outline the details and timetable for the assessment of the mine proposal.

“I have also arranged to meet with representatives of the mining company, Northern Energy, this Saturday in Brisbane.”

The Colton mine has the potential to provide a boost to the Fraser Coast economy but this cannot be at the expense of the health of the local community and the environment.

The Greens candidate, in his political fervour, has resorted to publicity stunts rather than address the real issues.

“I have always found that it is better to work diligently through the issues having gathered all the facts, to achieve a satisfactory outcome.”

Mr Truss said he continually travels through the Wide Bay electorate to keep aware of local issues and concerns and help where he can.
