Coalition will take real action to secure communities in Wide Bay
28th July, 2010
Federal Member for Wide Bay Warren Truss today said a Coalition Government will commit $50 million to support crime prevention programs in local communities.“Residents want to feel safe and secure in their homes and neighbourhoods. A Coalition Government will take real action to empower communities and support local crime prevention initiatives,” Mr Truss said.
“It is regrettable that Labor’s mismanagement and wasteful spending resulted in funding cuts to essential programs aimed at preventing crime. It is yet another demonstration that Labor has its priorities wrong,” Mr Truss said.
“The re-establishment of the former Coalition Government’s National Community Crime Prevention Programme will enhance community safety and prevent crime through the installation of CCTV and other security measures. Funding will also be provided to local councils to combat graffiti and vandalism.
“The National Community Crime Prevention Programme was a popular grassroots initiative that provided real protection to local communities. The program should never have been scrapped by the Rudd-Gillard Labor Government.”
The Coalition’s programme will complement existing state and territory government crime-fighting efforts. Applications for funding will also require the involvement of local police.
