Coalition’s Direct Action Plan on Health - Diabetes Clinical Trial Network
29th July, 2010
A Coalition Government will take direct action to bring a cure for Type 1 diabetes a little bit closer with a $35 million national Diabetes Clinical Trial Network, Federal Member for Wide Bay Warren Truss said today.“A Coalition Government would work with the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation to carry out further research and clinical trials into Type 1 diabetes, which will be great news for any local family managing the disease,” Mr Truss said.
“There are hundreds of families in the area which have a family member suffering from Type 1 Diabetes. Establishing a clinical trial network (CTN) would open up new possibilities for them in terms of finding a cure.
Establishing a Diabetes CTN means people with diabetes can join international clinical trials for promising new treatments and technologies for diabetes.
It would also give sufferers access to treatments five or ten years before they would otherwise become available in Australia.
An estimated 140,000 people suffer from Type 1 diabetes in Australia, and 20,000 of those are children.
“Overall Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes affects more than 800,000 Australians, and a clinical trial network could bring researchers just that bit closer to a cure for this chronic and life-threatening disease.”
The network would speed up access to the latest treatments and technologies, translate promising Australian research into clinical outcomes, improve health and reduce complications for those with Type 1 diabetes.
“There may well be flow on benefits to people who suffer from other auto-immune diseases, and some people with Type 2 diabetes who experience the same life threatening complications as those with Type 1
