Western Australia has confidence in Maryborough, but Bligh Labor does not!
22nd July, 2011
Federal Member for Wide Bay Warren Truss has welcomed the $160 million contract secured by Downer EDi and Bombardier to supply 15 three carriage train sets to the Western Australian Coalition Government, and has called on the Bligh Labor Government to show the same confidence in our local train manufacturer.“Maryborough’s trains are good enough for the modern new Perth passenger train system but according to Labor they are not good enough for Brisbane,” Mr Truss said.
“The Bligh Labor Government is big on spin and slogans, but Labor’s actions fail to match their rhetoric.
“Queenland Government vehicles driving around Maryborough have stickers on them telling the community to “Buy local and back Queensland” but the Bligh Government clearly does not practice what it preaches.
“If the Queensland Government supported local industry it would back its sticker campaign with action and ensure that trains for Queensland were supplied by Queensland businesses,” Mr Truss said.
“While Maryborough’s trains are in demand interstate, Premier Anna Bligh and Treasurer Andrew Fraser have cancelled orders for trains from Maryborough and made tendering processes so onerous that Downer EDi has withdrawn from Queensland Rail projects.
“The Western Australian Coalition Government is happy to back our local train industry and it’s about time the Queensland Government did the same.”
