Just 6 days to have your say on Labor's carbon tax
16th September, 2011
Federal Member for Wide Bay Warren Truss is encouraging local families and businesses to make their views known on Julia Gillard’s proposed carbon tax - but has warned that people have to act quickly. The Parliamentary Joint Select Committee on Australia's Clean Energy Future Legislation is holding an Inquiry into Labor's carbon tax.
The Labor-Greens dominated inquiry into the 1,100-plus pages of carbon tax legislation introduced into Federal Parliament this week has determined that six days is long enough for people to make submissions to the inquiry.
"Even though Julia Gillard promised never to introduce a carbon tax, and promised to achieve a deep and lasting national consensus before taking any action on taxing carbon, she will now only allow Australians six days to have their say on Labor's great big new tax," Mr Truss said.
“Most Australians will miss out on having their voice heard, such is the contempt that the Labor Party, Greens and Independents have for our democracy," Mr Truss said.
“Despite Julia Gillard making it as hard as possible for Australians to have their say on her carbon tax, I urge everyone to make their views known by lodging a submission, no matter how detailed or brief.
‪“Labor lied at the last election and has denied Australians a vote on whether we want a carbon tax or not. Hopefully people will not allow Labor's anti democratic tactics to silence them as well.”
Written submissions must be received by next Thursday, 22 September. They can be emailed to jscacefl@aph.gov.au or posted to the select committee care of Parliament House, Canberra.
