Nominate a Green Army project to benefit Wide Bay’s environment
20th June, 2013
Federal Member for Wide Bay, Warren Truss, today called on Councils, environmental groups and local organisations to identify conservation projects that could benefit from Green Army support.“A Liberal and Nationals Coalition Government will establish a Green Army of approximately 15,000 young Australians to improve the environment and help clean up Australia,” Mr Truss said.
"I am calling on the community to submit ideas for worthwhile projects. Projects could include cleaning up a local creek, re-vegetating riverbanks, restoring a bushwalking path, establishing a boardwalk, planting mangroves, or restoring native species to the land.”
"A Coalition Government will take real action to support local environmental projects. The Green Army will enable teams of young people to undertake environmental projects in nearly every community across the country.
“The Wide Bay electorate has a diverse landscape. Whether it is the Mary Valley, inland parks and reserves, or coastal areas, the local environment can always use a helping hand,” Mr Truss said.
The Green Army will be comprised of teams of up to 10 people including a co-ordinator to tackle local environmental projects. Each project may take up to 25 weeks to complete. Participants will receive a training wage and supervision.
"This is a great opportunity for local environment groups and councils to identify projects and team up with the Green Army to get the job done, or they may act as co-ordinators for projects which they see as a priority for our area,” Mr Truss said.
“The Coalition has a strong track record of delivering on-the-ground projects which benefit the environment. The Green Army is an important part of our plan to protect and enhance Australia's environment for future generations through direct action and engagement with our community.”
