LNP’s plan for better water safety
13th August, 2013
Federal Member for Wide Bay, Warren Truss, today said a Liberal Nationals Government will work with surf life saving, the Royal Life Saving Society and AUSTSWIM organisations to reduce the number of drowning accidents.“This is a great initiative for Wide Bay, where we have some of the best beaches and waterways in Australia and this policy will help to support the work of those professionals who save lives every day,” Mr Truss said.
“Under the plan, surf life saving clubs will benefit from average grants of $25,000 over five years, that can be used to purchase equipment, first aid and medical supplies,” Mr Truss said.
“A typical surf club spends $3,000 a year on medical supplies including lotions, band-aids and bandages, so these grants will provide practical help to support surf clubs and the work they do.”
A Coalition Government will also provide $2 million to expand the successful Beach Drowning Black Spot Reduction programme.
“Australians love the water, but tragically five people lose their life to drowning every week. The Coalition is committed to working with water safety experts to cut the number of drownings on our beaches, waterways and rivers and in pools and baths,” Mr Truss said.
“Most drownings can, in some way, be prevented, so we must focus our efforts on helping to avoid them wherever possible,” Mr Truss said.
“The Coalition will also work with the Royal Life Saving Society to Australia to improve water safety on our inland waterways.
“This includes targeting the use of alcohol on the water, the safe use of watercraft, as well as providing training on water safety and CPR.
“I hope that this policy will save many families from heartache.
“The Coalition’s $15 million commitment to better water safety is part of our Real Solutions Plan to build a stronger Australia and a better future — for all Australians.”
