LNP’s Green Army to help revitalize the Mary River at Gympie

30th August, 2013
Federal Member for Wide Bay, Warren Truss, today announced that an incoming Federal Liberal Nationals Government will deliver a Green Army project to support local efforts to protect the nesting ground of the endangered Mary River Turtle, rehabilitate the banks of the Mary River, and improve recreational access to the River.

“A Coalition Government will provide funding for 10 people, including a supervisor, for up to 26 weeks,” Mr Truss said.

“The project will revitalize part of the Mary River between Kidd Bridge and The Sands. This will limit four-wheel-drive—access to the river banks and will protect the nesting area of the Mary River Turtle.

“Work will also be undertaken to clear weeds and debris, replant native species, landscaping, and strengthening the Mary River Walk to improve access and safety.

“This project will help to revitalize the Mary River banks and also improve recreational access for residents and visitors, enhancing the area’s appeal as a community asset,” Mr Truss said.

The project will be undertaken by the Gympie & District Landcare Group in consultation with the Gympie Regional Council, and the Mary River Catchment Coordinating Committee.

“The participants will learn new skills while improving both the environment and the amenity of the river in a very practical way,” Mr Truss said.

“The Coalition’s Green Army will deliver real environmental outcomes by engaging 17 to 24 year olds. It will build on the success of the former Coalition Government’s popular Green Corps program, by providing more Australians with the opportunity to pursue environmental regeneration as a vocation.

“Practical action through the Coalition’s Green Army will provide people with the training and skills they need which will help to deliver a better environment.”
