South Burnett schools to commemorate Anzac Centenary through local grant
15th September, 2014
Federal Member for Wide Bay and Deputy Prime Minister Warren Truss, today announced $4,982 in Federal Government funding has been provided to the South Burnett Regional Council, for a Centenary of Anzac project. “The project involves Year 9 school students from Murgon State High School working with local veteran service groups to research biographies of local residents who served in the First World War,” Mr Truss said.
“A number of schools in the South Burnett will also participate in the project, giving them an opportunity to commemorate and reflect upon the service and sacrifice of Australians during the First World War.
“The biographies will be compiled and published in a book entitled, South Burnett’s Stories From World War 1 Diggers. Copies of the final publication will be made available to schools, students and RSL sub-branches that are involved in the production of the book,” Mr Truss said.
“This project complements many other commemorative activities that are being planned in communities in Wide Bay to recognise the Centenary of Anzac.
“The Anzac Centenary Local Grants Program supports projects that preserve the stories of World War I servicemen and women for future Australians.
“A total of $125,000 was made available from the Federal Government for community and ex-service groups in Wide Bay, to contribute to projects that commemorate the Centenary of Anzac.
“I would like to thank the members of my Electorate Committee who assisted in the assessment of project proposals. Their hard work has made projects funded through the Anzac Centenary Local Grants Program a reality.”
The Anzac Centenary Local Grants Program is a key element of the Australian Government’s Anzac Centenary program. For more information visit the website www.anzaccentenary.gov.au.
