Book to tell local veteran's extraordinary story
16th September, 2014
Federal Member for Wide Bay and Deputy Prime Minister Warren Truss, has welcomed the launch of a local book, The White Ghost, which records the remarkable military service of Maryborough World War II veteran, Jack Hanson. “Jack Hanson served and defended his country with distinction, at great peril to himself and under difficult circumstances,” Mr Truss said.
“I was happy to fulfil a request by local writer and researcher, Ms Toni McRae, to contribute a foreword for her account of Mr Hanson’s experiences.
“Mr Hanson’s story, is a typical example of how farmers, workers and Australians of various civilian occupations came together to form a professional army force, that would build upon the reputation of Australians who had fought before them, as soldiers of formidable daring, bravery and effectiveness on the battlefield.
“I am pleased to recommend this book, which I am sure will be treasured and kept by Jack’s family, as well as being added to the Maryborough RSL and Maryborough Military and Colonial Museum’s excellent archives,” Mr Truss said.
“This story is a great account of the moral and physical fibre of Jack and his mates, and it will set a fine example for future Australians.”
