1st October, 2014
Federal Member for Wide Bay and Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development Warren Truss, today announced that applications under Round One of the Australian Government’s landmark $1 billion National Stronger Regions Fund are now open“The National Stronger Regions Fund supports projects that improve economic opportunities by delivering infrastructure in local communities,” Mr Truss said.
“This program can make a real difference in Wide Bay, by funding local projects that lead to improved economic opportunities, and by leveraging new investment that supports jobs.
“The Fund is flexible enough to kick start a variety of local and regional development initiatives. Projects could range from freight and transport infrastructure, to civic centres and major multi-purpose sports and community facilities.
“The Government is committed to strengthening the regional economy, in disadvantaged areas. We are focused on improving productivity, economic opportunity, employment and workforce skills in communities experiencing difficult times,” Mr Truss said.
The National Stronger Regions Fund can provide local projects with between $20,000 and $10 million, covering up to 50 per cent of project costs.
“The Fund allows local communities the freedom to identify economic development projects that are most important to their needs. The Fund supports local communities investing in their own future,” Mr Truss said.
“The Fund encourages partnerships, with project proponents engaging with the private sector and other levels of government.
“I encourage local community groups who are seeking funds to get projects up and running, to apply for the National Stronger Regions Fund, to ensure that Wide Bay shares in this investment.”
Applications for funding will be considered in consultation with the Australian Government’s National Infrastructure Committee, which has a strong interest in, and commitment to harnessing the potential of Australia’s regions.
