Tinana Creek to benefit from 20 Million Trees grant

Federal Member for Wide Bay and Deputy Prime Minister Warren Truss today announced that the Maryborough region would benefit from $108,836 to protect Tinana Creek, as part of the Australian Government’s 20 Million Trees Programme.“The Burnett Mary Regional Group will receive funding to plant 14,342 trees over three years in the Tinana Creek riparian corridor, near Maryborough. The project will help protect the lowland subtropical rainforest at the site and the vulnerable Quassia shrub, which is also native to the area,” Mr Truss said.
“The revegetation of the Tinana Creek riparian corridor with native plant species will assist in reducing the amount of fine sediment entering the waterway, which will in turn help to improve the water quality of the creek, which is home to the endangered Mary River Cod.
“The waterways around Maryborough are an iconic feature of our region and places such as Tinana Creek have a special place in our community. This funding is an important way of ensuring that the Creek and its plant and animal life may continue to flourish, in the years ahead.”
“These grants are part of $50 million being provided by the Federal Government over four years, to actively involve local communities, individuals and organisations, in the re-establishment of native vegetation and fauna in their regions while also contributing to carbon sequestration,” Mr Truss said.
