Azac Centenary Local Grant provides new interactive war record consoles and honour boards for Marybo
5th January, 2015
The Maryborough Wide Bay and Burnett Historical Society will receive more than $20,000 to create two new Honour Boards and a new interactive digital war record system, through the Federal Government’s Anzac Centenary Local Grants program, Federal Member for Wide Bay and Deputy Prime Minister Warren Truss announced today. “The grant includes funding for two new honour boards to be installed in the Maryborough Town Hall, near the existing honour boards. The new honour boards will include the names of 200 people from the region who fought in WW1, who are currently not listed on the existing honour boards displayed in the Town Hall,” Mr Truss said.
“The new touch screen console will be installed in the visitor information centre, which is attached to the Maryborough Town Hall, and will allow the public to access and view records of people from our region who fought in World War One.
“The console will use existing war records, which will be converted into a digital format, allowing members of the public to search for the service records of local servicemen or women, using their name, service number or other details.
“The records will include biographical information on the serviceman or woman, as well as existing photographs and the details of their service. The consoles will also contain links to information on the everyday lives of people who lived in our region between 1914 and 1918.
“The interactive nature of these records will make them more accessible to younger people from our region and will be particularly beneficial from an educational point of view, as school children will have a treasure trove of historical information at their fingertips.
“I wish to particularly acknowledge the contribution of the Maryborough and Wide Bay Historical Society, which compiled the records and historical information that made these projects possible.
“These projects will preserve the names of World War One servicemen and women from the Maryborough and Wide Bay region and will help to ensure that their contributions to our nation are not forgotten,” Mr Truss said.
