New tower will bring NBN and mobile phone services to Poona

12th August, 2015

A new era of telecommunications are set to come to Poona, with Telstra and NBN Co in the final stages of planning for a new mobile phone and fixed wireless broadband tower to service the area, Federal Member for Wide Bay and Deputy Prime Minister Warren Truss announced today.

“The 35m high tower will house 3 NBN Co panel antennas and 6 Telstra panel antennas which will deliver a quantum leap in the reliability and speed of services available to the residents of Poona,” Mr Truss said.

“As part of the planning process for the tower, Telstra and NBN Co held a community consultation session at the Poona Centenary Hall this week and the Development Application for the facility is expected to be submitted to Fraser Coast Regional Council for planning approval shortly.”

Mr Truss said the proposed new tower will use advanced 4G technology to provide internet speeds of around 25mbps download and 5mbps upload - fast enough for local users to stream multiple high definition videos simultaneously.

“Once operational, wireless broadband speeds at Poona will be comparable to high-end ADSL2+ services available in metropolitan areas of Queensland,” Mr Truss said.

“I also welcome this investment by Telstra in their mobile telephone network, which will greatly increase the quality of their services to the Poona community.

“The rollout of the NBN to small communities like Poona demonstrates the Coalition Government’s commitment to prioritise broadband upgrades in rural and regional areas with the poorest coverage.

“The Coalition Government is serious about delivering its commitment to get the NBN rollout back on track and provide better, faster and cheaper broadband for regional Australians.”

The NBN will update residents when construction is completed and services become available.
