Glenorchy Straight opens ahead of schedule

18th September, 2015

A NOTORIOUS stretch of the Bruce Highway south of Maryborough is now safer for all motorists, with upgrade works on the Glenorchy straight finished two weeks early.

Deputy Prime Minister, Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development and Member for Wide Bay Warren Truss said the upgrade was prioritised because of accidents and fatalities along this particular stretch of highway.

“It’s great news for all concerned that these works have finished early, to the benefit of all drivers travelling this section of the highway,” Mr Truss said.

“We have acted on local concerns by strengthening and widening the road to accommodate wider traffic lanes, sealed the road shoulders and a created a wide centre line treatment.

“New protected turning lanes have also been built at the intersections of the highway and Old Gympie Road and Eight Mile Roads.
“The community has been working hard to make sure these upgrades happen, and today is a celebration of our combined efforts.”

Queensland Minister for Main Roads, Road Safety and Ports Mark Bailey said the upgrades covered a two kilometre stretch of the Bruce Highway from south of Old Gympie Road to north of Seven Mile Road.

“The government is committed to improving road safety around Queensland and the Wide Bay community will benefit from these upgrades,” Mr Bailey said.

The $5.2 million Glenorchy Straight project has been jointly funded with the Australian Government contributing $4.1 million and the Queensland Government $1.1 million.
