Desert Pea brings Federal Government services to Gympie region

14th January, 2016

The Desert Pea Mobile Service Centre will be travelling through communities in the Gympie region later this month, making it easier for local residents to access Federal Government services.

Federal Member for Wide Bay and Deputy Prime Minister Warren Truss, said that the Mobile Service Centre will travel to Tin Can Bay, Rainbow Beach and Goomeri between the 25th and 28th of January.

“I welcome this visit by the Desert Pea Mobile Service Centre, which will bring a range of Federal Government services to residents of smaller communities in Wide Bay, thereby saving them the cost and inconvenience of a trip to a larger town,” Mr Truss said.

“The Mobile Service Centre will give people in these towns access to Centrelink and Medicare payments and services as well as Child Support information and hearing health checks.

“The Desert Pea is a truck set up as an office, with custom-built technology that allows people to access Medicare and Centrelink services. It is wheelchair accessible and has a soundproof room to allow staff to undertake free hearing checks.”

“The Australian Taxation Office has also made staff available to assist individuals and small business taxpayers with tax and superannuation. They can also help people wishing to register for myGov, which provides a one-stop-shop for the ATO and several other government services via the internet,” Mr Truss said.

“I applaud the use of these Mobile Service Centres, which are an excellent way to improve the availability of Australian Government services for people in regional areas such as Wide Bay.”

The Desert Pea’s itinerary, along with further information on Mobile Service Centres is available online at humanservices.gov.au/mobileoffice, or via telephone on 132 316.
