2016 Australia Day message

22nd January, 2016

Federal Member for Wide Bay and Acting Prime Minister Warren Truss, has today encouraged residents of Wide Bay to join together in celebrating Australia Day on Monday, January 26.

“This Australia day we proudly celebrate our nationhood and reflect on the qualities that make our country such a great place to live,” Mr Truss said.

“We are fortunate to live in a country of unrivalled beauty, which is unspoiled by conflict, warfare or oppression “ these are all things that we should celebrate and be thankful for.

“As a nation and a people, we are famous for our innovation, tenacity, diligence and compassion. These values were forged by the challenges of inhabiting a land that can be both bountiful and unforgiving.

“We celebrate the uniquely Australian spirit of helping your mate in times of trouble or need, especially times of flood, drought or natural disaster.

“Only recently we saw a group of men and women who donated their time and money to undertake a hay run to drought stricken communities in western Queensland, which I think is an exemplary demonstration of the Australian spirit.

“Australia Day is also an occasion to look to the future, consider the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead, and decide how we can make the most of them,” Mr Truss said.

“Almost every city, town and community captures some of the spirit of our national day through locally organised events and commemorations and I encourage everyone to participate in their local celebrations.”

This year Mr Truss will be attending the Australia Day celebrations and citizenship ceremony in Noosa.
