Better mobile coverage coming soon to Kin Kin

1st February, 2016

From late June 2016, residents of Kin Kin will be able to access new and improved mobile phone coverage, with the switch on of a new base station, Federal Member for Wide Bay and Deputy Prime Minister Warren Truss announced today.

The new tower will be the first of five new or upgraded mobile base stations to switch on in Wide Bay, funded by an $864,000 funding package delivered under Round 1 of the Federal Government’s Mobile Black Spots Programme.

“This new mobile base station will boost mobile phone coverage for the community of Kin Kin and will deliver a range of benefits for local residents, such as timely access to emergency services and the convenience of phone banking services,” Mr Truss said.

“The improved mobile phone coverage will also provide a boost for local business owners through increased productivity, particularly for small business owners, who are often short on time.”

The Coalition Government’s Programme is the largest one-time increase in mobile network coverage delivered under a single public funding programme in the history of mobile communications in Australia.

“Unlike the previous Labor Government, which abolished the Coalition’s $2.4 billion Communications Fund in 2007, this Government understands the importance of mobile coverage in regional and remote areas of Australia.

“This is why we have allocated $100 million for Round 1 of the Mobile Black Spots Programme and a further $60 million for Round 2.”

The locations of the new or upgraded base stations for Round 1 were selected following an extensive public consultation process which allowed residents in Wide Bay to nominate mobile black spot locations.

A map of mobile black spot locations and the locations which will receive new or upgraded coverage under the Programme is available from http://nationalmap.gov.au/
