Federal grant helps Local Literacy Club go Digital

15th April, 2016
The Maisie Kaufmann Learning Centre in Gympie will receive $5,000 towards their Digital Literacy Upgrade, under the Federal Government’s Stronger Communities Programme (SCP), Federal Member for Wide Bay Warren Truss announced today.

“This funding will allow the centre to purchase computer equipment and materials for a new fit-out of the training room which will enable up to 300 local residents each year to update their computer skills and improve their digital literacy,” Mr Truss said.

“NBN Co is currently rolling out Fixed Wireless services in the Wide Bay community and access to high speed internet will give many people improved services in health, education and employment. However, people without digital literacy will be unable to access these opportunities. The Maisie Kaufmann Learning Centre will be able to assist those in the community at risk of becoming isolated and disadvantaged to upgrade their digital skills and engage with their communities,” Mr Truss said.

“All construction labour will be performed by construction training students from Fraser Coast TESS and will contribute to their practical work experience.

The Stronger Communities Programme is a Federal Government initiative designed to increase the resilience of communities, especially those in disadvantaged areas, by providing grants for small capital projects.

Local councils and incorporated not for profit organisations can apply for grants of between $5,000 and $20,000, with up to $150,000 available for each Federal electorate per year. Applications for the second round of the program have recently closed and are now being assessed.
