Federal grant helps local Men’s Shed fund workspaces

29th April, 2016
The Noosa Men’s Shed will receive $12,957 to construct a studio suitable for cooking, leather and lead lighting work under the Coalition Government’s Stronger Communities Programme (SCP), Federal Member for Wide Bay Warren Truss announced today.

“This grant will allow Noosa Men’s Shed to erect and convert a donated car port into a space for cooking lessons, following on from the earlier establishment of a vegetable garden. The studio will also provide a place for leatherworking and lead lighting work.

“A number of local building and engineering firms have donated labour and advice to the Noosa Men’s Shed which already houses a functioning kitchen and office, woodwork shop, community garden and with a metalwork facility under construction.

“Retirees often feel removed from their family networks and past work mates. This funding will enable the Noosa Men’s Shed to provide a place for the men in our community to learn new skills and build new friendships,” Mr Truss said.

The Stronger Communities Programme is a Federal Government initiative designed to increase the resilience of communities, by providing grants for small capital projects.

Local councils and incorporated not for profit organisations can apply for grants of between $5,000 and $20,000, with up to $150,000 available for each Federal electorate per year. Applications for the second round of the program have recently closed and are now being assessed.
