Study proves Traveston is Queensland Labor’s folly
Mr Truss said the independent review, undertaken by the Institute for Sustainable Futures, UTS and Cardno at the request of Mary Valley Council of Mayors, was designed to assess the Queensland Government’s Traveston Dam as a major part of an overall strategy for meeting the long term water supply needs in South East Queensland.
“It is a disgrace that Peter Beattie has not yet listened to the people of the Mary Valley in his decision making process. Mary Valley residents have been against this ridiculous idea since Mr Beattie first proposed the Dam. This review from experts in the field supports the people of the Valley, not Mr Beattie,” Mr Truss said.
“It throws cold water on any debate in support of a dam on the Mary River at Traveston Crossing. The review categorically dismisses the need for Mr Beattie’s Dam.”
“The review states the Dam… “is neither necessary nor desirable as part of the portfolio for ensuring supply security to 2050…” and also that it represents … “a high total cost, high unit cost, high risk and high environmental and social impact option…(and) … should not be considered for implementation.”
“What more does Peter Beattie need to see to persuade him to back down from this crazy plan?” Mr Truss asked.
“Mr Beattie most certainly should feel responsible for the current water shortage in SEQ, because it was the failure of his government that created the problem. But he should not pass his guilt on to the people of Gympie and the Mary Valley.”
“He should admit that this is another mistake, accept the blame and axe the project. He and Ms Bligh should cut the slick spin and ridiculous options and get on with practical alternatives to fix the problem.”
“This review confirms what everyone in the Mary Valley has been saying all along. The Traveston Crossing Dam is a dud, and should be canned immediately. The people of the region deserve better than the treatment that has been handed out to them by Mr Beattie and his gang of bullies,” Mr Truss said.
