Leadership of The Nationals
3rd December, 2007
The new Leader of The Nationals, Warren Truss, said today that Rudd Labor would be held accountable for the fortunes of local communities across Australia by spirited Nationals in Opposition.
Mr Truss, who was elected Leader by his Nationals colleagues in Canberra today, said he was honoured to take on this important task. He also warmly welcomed the appointment of Senator Nigel Scullion as party Deputy and Senate Leader.
“Nigel Scullion has impressed all as a minister in the outgoing Howard-Vaile Government, and his consultative style will stand the party in good stead over coming years,” Mr Truss said.
“I will approach the task of rebuilding after the election defeat with enthusiasm and commitment. With city-centric Labor in government everywhere in Australia, The Nationals will be a strong voice providing effective representation for local communities, no matter where they may be.
“Labor State governments have been downgrading local services and facilities outside the capital cities for many years. This cannot be allowed to also happen under Rudd Labor.
“Mr Rudd has held out the promise of lower interest rates and cutting cost-of-living expenses and so we will work hard to hold him accountable on behalf of all Australians.
“As part of our rebuilding between now and the next election, I will be talking with people across Australia about the issues that are important to them. The Nationals are a team of local champions, and policy development will flow from those grassroots discussions.
“We have delivered in government and Australia is now a stronger and prouder nation. With the right policy and leadership mix, we can win the next election.
“I would again like to pay tribute to Mark Vaile for his leadership during the last term and I hope that he will play a key role in the party’s rebuilding over the next term,” Mr Truss said.
