Kay Hull’s retirement – a champion for the Riverina

6th April, 2010
The announcement today that Kay Hull will be retiring at the next election means the departure from politics of one of the nation’s best loved and hardest working local parliamentarians.

“Kay Hull might be tiny in stature but that belies her huge commitment and vision for the Riverina, and her passionate advocacy for what she believes in,” said the Leader of The Nationals, Warren Truss.

“First elected in 1998, Kay has kept us all on our toes as party whip and with her extraordinary industriousness and determination to represent her constituents. She could have held higher office if she had chosen to do so.

“Many people in work today in the Riverina owe their jobs to Kay as she has worked hard to provide opportunities for regional development, small business, health, aged care and the disabled. She has been a particularly vigorous advocate for Charles Sturt University, the RAAF Base at Wagga and Rex Airlines. Rex even named one of their aircraft in her honour.

“Kay has never been an ordinary politician. A former tow truck driver, Deputy Mayor of Wagga Wagga, and Chairman of the Council of Tourist Associations in New South Wales, she is very proud of her extended family, and has done some brilliant work with the International Parliamentary Union Committee dealing with HIV / AIDS.”

Kay was Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Family Services whose report ‘Every Picture Tells a Story’ created the initiative for substantial reforms to Family Law and the Child Support system.

“Kay will be incredibly difficult to replace, but the search is now on to find a new candidate. As in other regional seats, The Nationals have put forward top quality people and I expect nothing less in Riverina.

“I know Kay will strongly represent the Riverina until the day of the election, and will never stop working on behalf of local people. I wish Kay, her husband Graeme and their children the very best before and after her retirement,” Mr Truss said.
