Australians need more than a part-time Government
29th November, 2010
The promise today by the Prime Minister that 2011 will be Labor’s “year of delivery and decision” begs the question – what have the last three years been about? The Leader of The Nationals, Warren Truss, said Labor under the latest version of “Real Julia” apparently believes it should be excused for not governing in an election year, or even in the year leading up to an election.
“This is the strangest prime ministerial announcement I have seen since Ms Gillard announced that a citizen’s assembly of 150 would decide Labor’s climate change policy,” Mr Truss said.
“All it does is confirm everything the Coalition has been saying about the Government for more than two years now – that Labor is paralysed by fear, indecision and a lack of vision, and is essentially incapable of governing.
“This at best appears to be yet another Labor diversion, trying to look positive in the face of the Victorian state election result where Labor has been soundly rebuffed.
“At worst, it is yet another empty Labor promise, aimed at giving party members and gullible independents something to take back to their electorates and claim the muddy wheels of this Government are finally moving.
“Ms Gillard is making her announcement today before the Committee for Economic Development of Australia, an august 50-year-old body where the biggest issues facing Australia and the globe have been discussed among the titans of politics, industry and academia.
“From advance media reports of Ms Gillard’s speech, today’s effort seems to be aimed at nothing more than keeping the faceless men from toppling her like they decapitated Kevin Rudd.
“Next year Labor will finally make good on its promises about a carbon price, Ms Gillard says. Let’s not forget Labor dumped its own emissions trading scheme and then promised at the election it would never put a price on carbon.
“The other big promise is for a National Broadband Network. Let’s not forget this was promised more than three years ago yet we have still not seen the legislation to set up the NBN.
“The Prime Minister says 2011 will be a year where there will be nowhere to hide, and every dollar spent will be held up to the light. We will be expecting her to keep her promises but they have not been kept so far,” Mr Truss said.
