Dubbo’s new intersection complete

WORKS on the Talbragar and Brisbane streets roundabout is now complete, providing a quicker flow of traffic in the central business district, as well as beautifying the streetscape design.Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development, Warren Truss, said the project was a $1.9 million project funded by Dubbo City Council ($1.18 million) and the Australian Government ($724,568) through its Roads to Recovery Programme.
“It is expected some 20,000 vehicles will pass through this roundabout every day, so these upgrades are now easing congestion and removing delays from the hub of town,” Mr Truss said.
“Under Roads to Recovery the Australian Government is providing $373.5 million in 2013-14 to improve local roads around Australia,” he said.
At the opening today, Federal Member for Parkes, Mark Coulton, said the project provided a much needed revamp of Talbragar and Brisbane streets, especially the landscaping on the roundabout which features a Sengal Date Palm surrounded by Sago Palms.
“The inclusion of the palm trees came about from a 1927 photograph of Talbragar Street,” Mr Coulton said.
State Member for Dubbo, Troy Grant said the landscaping was cleverly planned in keeping with the history of Dubbo, with the palm tree theme for Talbragar Street providing a link to nearby Victoria Park palms.
“On top of the upgrade to the roundabout there was a Beautification Scheme that began in 2002, with landscaping a key consideration during all stages of the project," Mr Grant said.
Dubbo City Council Mayor, Mathew Dickerson, said the new intersection would provide better traffic flow as well as improved safety through metal guardrails.
“In time to come, tables and chairs will be installed as part of the ongoing street beautification,” Dickerson said.
Mr Truss concluded that since the Government created Roads to Recovery in 2001 over 44,500 projects had been delivered, and that the Government is committed to continuing the Programme.
