New sports complex for Mt Gravatt
20th November, 2013
THE Mount Gravatt community will reap the benefits of easier access to recreation and sporting facilities with the first stage opening of the Mt Gravatt Sports and Recreation Club Sports Complex. The new complex includes a main hall for netball, hockey, basketball, futsal and lacrosse, along with a canteen, viewing deck, amenities area and parking facilities.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development, Warren Truss, said the complex would offer more sports opportunities for local schools and the community.
“The complex has greatly increased the array of available sports, as well as access to physical activity and recreation,” Mr Truss said.
“Sporting activities have involved considerable travel, but now there is a dedicated facility easily accessible to families and schools.
“With a fast growing population, there was a clear need for this facility. It will enhance the community’s focus on a healthy lifestyle, be a venue for visiting teams and bring greater business prospects.
The Member for Bonner, Ross Vasta, said the complex would act as a framework for local sporting clubs to administer their individual sports.
“The Mt Gravatt Sports and Recreation Club Sports Complex management team will work collaboratively with the various sporting codes to help manage funds and resources,” Mr Vasta said.
“The community will benefit because the sports they are interested in will be managed in a more efficient and effective manner.”
State Member for Mansfield, Ian Walker, said the complex would be used by a great cross-section of the community.
“The new complex will be well-used by sporting groups, community groups, local schools, and act as a venue for sport carnivals and fundraising events,” Mr Walker said.
“It will become a community gathering place, bringing with it important social benefits.”
The Australian Government contributed $2 million and Queensland State Government contributed $750,000.
