Brisbane’s new container terminal stacking up

22nd January, 2014
CONTAINER operations on Australia’s waterfront have entered a new era in efficiency with the opening of Hutchison Port Holding’s new Brisbane Container Terminal.

Acting Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development Warren Truss today officially opened the new container terminal, which is the first in Australia to have automated stacking cranes.

Mr Truss said the new system would allow for a more efficient service to shipping lines, importers and exporters.

“Today I joined CEO of Hutchison Ports Australia Stephen Gumley AO and Deputy Chairman John Meredith CBE to inspect this new world-class freight facility– a game changer that places the Port of Brisbane at the cutting edge of stevedoring technology,” Mr Truss said.

“The new facility features high tech systems allowing for shipping containers to be stacked automatically five high and more densely, instead of three high in single rows, which has been the standard up until now.

“Brisbane is the fastest growing container port in Australia and it is essential that we continue to develop our waterfront capacity so Australia remains productive and competitive in the global market.

“With almost 1,000 container ships moving through the port in the last twelve months, the Australian government is keeping on the front foot of developing infrastructure, which is why this development forms part of a bigger vision.

“The Australian Government is committed to partnering with the Queensland Government to investigate the infrastructure required for a new 24/7 rail freight link, improving intermodal connections for the continued growth of freight through the Port of Brisbane, and providing $300 million to get the Inland Rail project underway.

“It is infrastructure projects like this, which focus on moving freight more efficiently in Australia that will be crucial to delivering the Australian Government’s commitment to boost economic productivity.”
