ARARAT residents are now enjoying a new state of the art multipurpose sporting facility with today’s opening of the Alexandra Oval Community and Recreation Centre.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development Warren Truss said the Centre will be a regional hub for a range of sporting and recreational activities.

“The new Alexandra Oval Community and Recreation Centre is a great example of a high quality, sustainable piece of infrastructure that will be used by people of all ages and abilities,” Mr Truss said.

“The Australian Government is providing up to $500,000 towards this $3.8 million project and is strongly committed to developing community infrastructure to support regional economies.”

Senator the Hon Scott Ryan, Senator for Victoria and Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Education, said the Centre includes an accessible function room that will cater for up to 200 people, as well as coaching facilities, a meeting room, commercial kitchen and bathroom amenities.

“Sport and recreation play an important role in regional communities like Ararat,” Senator Ryan said.

“This new centre will be a place where people can get together for sporting and social activities, helping to strengthen social networks throughout the region.”

Mayor of Ararat Rural City Council Cr Paul Hooper said he hoped the Centre will be well used by a wide cross-section of the community.

“The Ararat community now has a modern sporting and community centre which will attract more regional sporting events to the region, boosting the local economy,” Cr Hooper said.

The project received funding support from the Victorian Government which contributed $1.15 million, and Ararat City Council which contributed $2.05 million.

Further funds were contributed by Ararat Community Enterprise, the Ararat Football Club and the Alexandra Oval Committee of Management.
